He is appealing a decision to revoke his flying licence after 11 people died when his vintage plane crashed on a dual carriageway in a failed stunt above West Sussex air show crowds in 2015.

The CAA’s David McCorquodale, who made the decision, told the hearing: “(His flying) was so appallingly bad, it was incompetence, ignorance.

“I was no longer satisfied he was a fit and proper person to hold those licences.”

Julie Smith, who lost her son Richard, 26, in the tragedy said: “The main thing for Mr Hill is he has never accepted any responsibility or shown any remorse.”

Former BA pilot Mr Hill, 60, was cleared of manslaughter after a trial in 2019.

An inquest determined the victims had been unlawfully killed.

He told the CAA panel: “I cannot say I am more sorry than I am.

“I just don’t understand what happened on that day.”

The central London hearing continues.
