A SHOPPER has revealed a genius Lidl hack for getting bargains and freebies from the supermarket even when you’re on holiday abroad.
The customer shared the tip with other Lidl shoppers who were excited to learn about it.
She explained that you can use Lidl Plus abroad by changing the settings on your app.
This allows you to get freebies or coupons on your shopping that you can also use when you’re on holiday.
The shopper wrote on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group: “Not sure if this has been posted before, but if you have the Lidl app and are on holiday you can set it to that country and make use of the offers.
“Also some countries have some good freebies as part of a spend or as a rub off coupon.
“Just go to settings and find the relevant country.”
Some members of the group said they were aware of the option to switch countries on the app, but others had no idea that this was possible.
A person commented: “I’ve used it in France and the Netherlands.”
Someone else said they also used it in Portugal and Spain, adding: “Freebie in Spain last week was a pack of ice lollies.
“Works just like at home.”
One shopper who wasn’t aware of this option wrote: “Ohhh thank you. I go to Poland soon I didn’t realise.”
Someone else said: “Interesting thank you.”
And another added: “Well you learn something new every day. What a great tip! Thank you.”
One more person commented: “Thank you. I didn’t know that.”
Lidl confirmed that it’s possible to use the app abroad and that customers can get offers by choosing the country they’re visiting.
However, they said any spend abroad doesn’t count towards your monthly spend total, so you will not see it in the app once you switch countries back to Great Britain.
A spokesperson told The Sun: “You can get Lidl plus offers abroad by simply heading to the settings in your Lidl plus app and choosing the relevant country.
“For example, today in France you can get a free surprise reward when you checkout in store.”
They added: “Please note that any spend abroad will not be added to your monthly spend total when you return e.g. if you spend €10 in France this will not be added to your account when you switch it back to GB.”
Retailers closing stores in 2024
RETAILERS have been hit by soaring inflation and a downturn in spending due to the cost of living crisis.
High energy costs and a move to shopping online are also taking their toll.
Some high street shops have closed due to businesses opening up in different locations such as larger retail parks.
Shops may also close due to a number of other reasons, such as rising rents.
We explain which retailers are closing in 2024:
- Argos – The brand announced plans to close 100 standalone UK branches last year as it looks to move away from the high street and focus on expanding its presence in supermarkets.
- B&Q – The chain has over 300 shops across the UK, with two stores closing this year due to leases not being renewed. It has plans to open more in 2024 too.
- Boots – The health and beauty chain announced that it would be closing 300 stores last July. Closures are ongoing and this will see the retailer’s estate reduced from 2,200 to 1,900 shops.
- Clintons – Clintons mulled plans to close 38 shops in a bid to avoid insolvency late last year. We’ve listed the stores affected.
- Costa Coffee – The caffeine giant has around 2,000 sites nationwide, so chances are you’ll have one near you. The chain has shut the doors to dozens of its sites recently. We’ve revealed which stores are due to close this year.
- Iceland – The supermarket has more than 900 stores but closed nearly two dozen sites in 2023, and more selected shops are due to shut.
- Lidl – The supermarket, which has 950 stores, is changing up shop locations, which has meant that some stores have to close. But the retailer is also looking to open 12 new supermarkets.
- M&S – M&S, which runs 405 stores across the country, has been closing a string of branches across the country in a blow for shoppers. It’s not all bad news, though, because the chain also has big plans to open dozens of new shops.
- Trespass – The firm announced in July last year that it was closing six branches, but more are on the way.
- WHSmith – The retail giant, which runs over 1,100 stores, has shut eight stores since March 2023, but more are coming.
How does Lidl’s loyalty app work?
Lidl Plus works by offering customers personalised coupons based on their purchases which change each week.
These coupons can then be activated and redeemed in-store to get money off certain products.
You can also unlock free bakery and products by spending over certain thresholds through Coupon Plus.
For example, if you spend £250 you get 10% off your next shop, or a free bakery item if you spend £50.
You can download the Lidl Plus app on to a smartphone or android via the Apple App Store or Google Play store.
