GTA 6 unlikely to be delayed due to SAG-AFTRA strike – but actors can choose to boycott

THE largest union for voice actors in the US has announced a strike against a number of major video gaming companies.

SAG-AFTRA will strike against several companies, including GTA’s publisher Take-Two Productions.

GTA 6 is set to be the biggest gaming release of 2025, and fans were worried that the game would be delayed further.

However, SAG-AFTRA has clarified that GTA 6 will be exempt from the strike action, due to when the game began development.

The union clarified that “The language in the IMA is clear that video games that were already in production prior to August 25, 2023, including live service games, are not subject to the strike and remain covered by the ongoing terms of the 2020-2022 IMA.

“Performers would not be in violation of the strike order if they continue working on these games.”

The Chief Contracts Officer for the union, Ray Rodriguez, made a further statement to Inverse, claiming that voice actors in the union may still choose to boycott the game.

Rodriguez said: “Members who want to show solidarity with the union can elect voluntarily not to work on these titles.

“And we know that many of our members are going to become unavailable to work on those.

“So while [non-struck games like GTA 6] may not be subject to a strike in the technical sense, their production is also subject to being disrupted by members who don’t want to work without the protection of AI terms and who don’t want to undermine solidarity with the union.”

The majority of the voice work for GTA 6 has likely already been completed, though voice actors often have to return at a later date to re-record lines, or record additional voice lines.

However, this additional work may be included in the actors’ original contracts, and therefore would not be affected by the strikes.

It appears that if GTA 6 does see delays, it’s unlikely that it’s due to the voice actors’ strike.
