‘Hangover-busting’ household staple can help you battle a sore head this Christmas

WE will suffer an average of three hangovers over the Christmas period — each lasting about eight hours.

That is the equivalent of missing out on a full 24-hour day of festive fun.

And 57 per cent of drinkers reckon the repercussions get worse with age, with 46 per cent telling pollsters that sore heads and dodgy tummies last longer than five years ago.

As a result, 71 per cent said they had tried supposed cures but 30 per cent had not found any that worked.

The favourite pick-me-up remains the classic full English breakfast.

Dietitian Dr Carrie Ruxton said: “Eggs include the hangover-busting cysteine — an essential amino acid that reduces nausea and headaches by breaking down acetaldehyde, one of the worst by-products of alcohol metabolism.

“Eggs are also a source of high-quality protein which is proven to support appetite control, stopping you reaching for high calorie comfort foods later in the day.”

A spokesperson for British Lion Eggs, which commissioned the survey, said: “It’s clear from the research that Brits are suffering when it comes to hangovers, with many of us turning to food to help us through.

“We would never encourage over-indulgence in alcohol, but if you accidentally do, eggs are a nutrient-dense tasty and cost-effective food you can enjoy to get you back on the road to recovery”.
