THIS is the shocking moment a car exploded into a huge fireball on a busy high street.
Firefighters raced to St Mary’s Square in Brixham, Devon, at around 9.30pm on Thursday.
Dramatic photos and footage show the vehicle fully ablaze near Bombay Mix Indian takeaway with the fire spreading rapidly.
The crew at Brixham Fire Station said they arrived to find flames and smoke billowing from the car.
A video shared on Facebook captured the car already up in flames before an explosion which caused sparks to fly into the air and the fire to get even bigger.
Locals who appear to have emerged from their homes and nearby businesses can be seen looking on in shock.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was caused by accidental ignition.
A spokesperson said: “One fire appliance attended a car on fire in Brixham and crews confirmed it well alight on their arrival.
“The fire was extinguished using two hose reel jets with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
“Crews also used hydraulic cutters, spreaders, small tools and a thermal imaging camera.
“The fire was confirmed as accidental ignition and the vehicle was completely destroyed in the blaze.”
Firefighters who attended the scene said the flames had spread quickly and engulfed the entire vehicle.
Brixham Fire Station shared images on their Facebook page where they can be seen battling the fire.
The car was left completely destroyed with further photos showing the scale of the wreckage.
The fire service remained at the scene until around 11.30pm when the vehicle was removed.
In a social media post, Brixham Fire Station said: “Last night at approximately 9.30pm after our weekly drill session the pagers alerted us to a car fire in St Mary’s Square, Brixham.
“The crew arrived to heavy smoke and flames as shown in the pictures below (video in comments).
“The fire had rapidly spread engulfing the whole vehicle.
“Two BA wearers with two hose reel jets were deployed to extinguish the fire and make the vehicle safe.
“We then waited with the vehicle for recovery until 11.30pm.”
