Job hunting is demoralising and expensive

DEAR DEIDRE: GETTING to a job interview took me half a day and left me skint, but when I arrived the interview didn’t even happen.

Instead, the employer gave me a form to fill out, which I could have done at home. I’m furious.

I’m a 19-year-old woman, and desperate to find a job and get off universal credit.

I want to earn money and contribute to society. I’m a hard-worker and I’m honest and reliable.

But employers keep mucking me around and I feel so rejected and hopeless.

Being £30 out of pocket from the interview that never happened was the final straw.

I’m sick of being treated like I’m nothing.

Deidre says:

You sound like you’d be an asset to any company. Don’t give up.

Sadly, some employers don’t treat people thoughtfully or respectfully.

In the meantime, you might be entitled to money from the government’s Flexible Support Fund which helps with interview travel expenses, tools and clothing/uniforms to start work. See Turn2Us (turn2us.org.uk) for more information.

A charity called Smart Works (smartworks.org.uk, 020 7288 1770) helps women with free confidence-boosting outfits for job interviews.
